Senior Manager, AI & Machine Learning

About the role:

We are seeking a highly experienced and visionary Senior Manager, AI & Machine Learning to lead and inspire a team of talented AI/ML engineers, and data engineers. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for defining, executing, and delivering advanced AI and machine learning solutions that directly impact our business objectives and enhance our products/services. You will combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership abilities to mentor your team, drive technical excellence, and foster a culture of innovation.

In addition to leading one of our most forward thinking disciplines, you will help the greater Tempo organization evolve their relationship with emerging AI trends and technologies. This will extend your reach and visibility to all disciplines of Tempo as we rethink how we work in a constantly changing environment.

What you’ll do:

• Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the long-term AI/ML strategy aligned with company goals, identifying new opportunities for leveraging machine learning to solve complex business problems.
• Team Management & Development: Lead, mentor, inspire, and grow a team of AI/ML engineers, data scientists, and data engineers. Foster a collaborative and high-performing environment, promoting continuous learning and professional development.
• Technical Direction & Execution: Provide strong technical guidance and oversight for the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable and robust AI/ML models and systems.
• Project Management: Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of multiple AI/ML projects, ensuring timely delivery, quality, and adherence to best practices.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, and other stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical specifications and deliver impactful solutions.
• Architectural Vision: Drive the architectural design and evolution of our AI/ML infrastructure, tools, and platforms, ensuring scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
• Innovation & Research: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI/ML research and industry trends, evaluating and integrating new technologies and methodologies where appropriate.
• Communication: Effectively communicate complex technical concepts and project progress to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive leadership.

Who you are:

• Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, or a related field.  Masters or Ph.D. preferred
• Experience:
  • 10 years of experience in AI/Machine Learning, with a strong focus on practical application and deployment of ML models in production environments.
  • 5 years of experience in a leadership role, managing and mentoring AI/ML engineering or data science teams.
  • Proven track record of delivering successful AI/ML products or features that have driven significant business value.
• Technical Proficiency:
  • Advanced proficiency with code writing: Python, Java, R, etc
  • Familiar with cloud technologies: AWS, GCP etc
  • Experience with both classical ML problems such as classification and regression, along with generative models such as LLMs
  • Extensive knowledge of ML frameworks, libraries, data structures, data modeling, and software architecture such as Sagemaker, HuggingFace, VertexAI, etc
    • Knowledge of feature stores (Tecton, Feast, etc is a nice to have)
  • Strong understanding of MLOps principles and tools (e.g., MLflow, Kubeflow, Airflow, Docker, Kubernetes) for model lifecycle management.
  • Solid understanding of mathematics, statistics, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.

  • Exceptional leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, with a passion for developing talent.
  • Strong project management abilities, including planning, execution, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to attract, recruit, and retain top-tier AI/ML talent.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate technical concepts into business outcomes.
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex problems into manageable components and design effective solutions.
