PROVISION OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE EXTENSION APPROACHES IN REACH PROJECT COMMUNITIES

Background
The Resilience Against Climate Change Project (REACH) is part of the three interlinked components of the EU Ghana Agriculture Program (i.e., MOAP-NW and Infrastructure projects being the other components) being implemented in the North-West Savannah of Ghana. Its primary objective is to enable a sustainable and inclusive improvement in the
rural economy through enhanced implementation of gender sensitive climate adaptation and mitigation measures in 200 selected communities within the JPA (Joint Programme Area). The REACH Project is being implemented by the German Development Corporation (GIZ) through its “Market Oriented Value Addition for jobs and growth in the ECOWAS (MOVE)” Project.

Component ii of the REACH Project focuses on community action plan development and improving the knowledge base of agricultural production systems of farmers through the promotion of Conservation Agriculture (CA) and Agroforestry practices. Specifically, the Project aims to improve agricultural production and land management through
the promotion of CA techniques and practices. With the goal to increase adoption rates of CA, REACH seeks to improve the agricultural extension system, both in quality and standards of the information available and in the methods of dissemination. As a result, the REACH Project intends to deploy several innovative approaches to agriculture extension to increase the adoption of CA practices with the goal to improve the lives of farmers and rural communities by promoting sustainability, increasing production, and changing conventional farming practices. Thus, the project seeks the help of an expert company to lead the implementation of innovative approaches to agricultural extension delivery in the 200 project communities. The objective of the assignment The objective of the assignment is to deliver innovative extension approaches to foster the adoption of CA and agroforestry in 50 project communities

Tasks to be performed by the bidder.
The organization/firm to be contracted is responsible for providing the following services outlined below. The services shall involve the implementation and evaluation of various innovative extension measures to promote the use of Conservation Agriculture (CA) among farmers in 50 project communities (see list of communities above). The innovative measures should include a customized audio book system, murals, and model farmer approach as detailed below

• Audio book system
The successful firm shall create audio content in five local languages (Dagaare, Sissaale, Brifo, Mampruli and Gonja) for the purposes of implementation the talking book systems in the project communities. These shall be done with the input of relevant stakeholders and REACH staff and the review of relevant materials to ensure the content is fit for purpose. AEAs and farmers shall be trained on the talking after which the devices shall be deployed to be used by
farmers and monitored.

• Murals Production and Installation
The firm shall develop mural concepts in three broad themes i.e. conservation agriculture, tree planting and bush fire management and paint them in all project communities. The concept shall be developed in participatory manner involving all relevant stakeholders.

• CA Champion (Model Farmer/Farmer-to-Farmer) Concept In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, farmers who have successfully adopted and practicing CA on their own in the project communities shall be identified and selected to serve as CA champions or change agents within their communities. They shall be supported to share their knowledge/experience with other farmers in their communities.
