About This Role

This role will be responsible to support the development and promotion of a positive Health and Safety culture among employees and contractors operating within surface mining activities. The role is responsible for driving, coordinating and enforcing health and safety requirements across surface operations while supporting operational and contractor leadership to achieve Health and Safety outcomes aligned with the mission, vision and values of Asante Gold at the Bibiani operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide professional advice and guidance to operational and contractor leadership on health and safety policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and standards. Coordinate the implementation of incident prevention programs in line with approved Health, Safety, and Environment (H&E) plans and objectives and provide effective supervision to operational Safety Officers.
  • Support the Safety Superintendent and operational teams in implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving Health and Safety programmes, with the aim of minimizing operational impacts on health, safety and the environment.
  • Participate in relevant HSE meetings and ensure that environmental and safety matters are appropriately raised, addressed, and actioned.
  • Ensure all safety incidents are promptly reported, investigated, and documented in accordance with statutory and corporate requirements, and track corrective and preventive actions to timely closure.
  • Collaborate with Unit Managers and Heads of Department to design, develop and administer Asante Gold HSE programs aligned with the Group HSE strategy, aimed at hazard identification, risk control and incident prevention.
  • Evaluate and assess health and safety risks associated with new projects, changing operating conditions, and corrective actions to ensure effective risk control and legislative compliance.
  • Contribute to the development of HSE training content and support the delivery of HSE training programs across the site.
  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of external inspections, audits, and regulatory engagements.
  • Identify and report health and safety non‑compliance by employees or contractors to the Safety Superintendent and HSE Manager, ensuring timely corrective action.
  • Partner with site leadership to enhance and optimize on‑site safety systems, programs and performance.
  • Maintain effective and professional working relationships with supervisors, employees, contractors and regulatory authorities.
  • Support the facilitation of daily, weekly and monthly HSE meetings in collaboration with site leadership and peers, as required.
  • Compile, analyse and submit HSE reports, statistics, and performance metrics in accordance with Asante Gold and AGBL reporting requirements.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Operations Manager and/or HSE Manager in support of business objectives.


Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • A master’s degree in occupational health and safety or a related field will be considered an added advantage.
  • National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Holder of a valid Senior HSE Certificate of Competency issued by the Minerals Commission of Ghana (mandatory).
  • Possession of an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Lead Auditor Certificate is desirable.
  • Valid Ghanaian Class B Driver’s Licence as a minimum requirement.
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in a Health and Safety role, such as Safety Officer, Health and Safety Officer, or Health and Safety Coordinator.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in risk management, hazard identification and loss prevention processes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively explain HSE concepts to both leadership and frontline employees.
  • Membership of relevant professional health and safety bodies is encouraged.
  • In‑depth knowledge of applicable Ghanaian health and safety legislation, including the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182) as well as related Legislative Instruments (L.I. 2173, L.I. 2174, L.I. 2176, and L.I. 2177).
  • Sound understanding and practical application of Safety Management Systems within a mining or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in risk management, hazard identification and loss prevention processes.
