Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. is seeking an experienced and highly capable mining planning professional to lead the mine planning function as Unit Manager – Mine Planning in the Technical Services Department.
ABOUT THE ROLE
This senior-level position plays a pivotal role in shaping both short and long-term mining strategies. The ideal candidate will be a technically strong leader with proven experience in mine design, scheduling, optimization, and team development. As a key member of the management team, the incumbent will contribute to corporate strategy while championing operational excellence and ensuring compliance across all mine planning activities. This position is a fixed-term role based at Asanko Gold Mine, Obotan (Manso Nkran) and is open exclusively to Ghanaian nationals.
ROLE PURPOSE:
• To lead the mine planning function by delivering safe, efficient, and optimized mine designs and production schedules that support both short- and long-term operational objectives.
• To provide strategic technical leadership that ensures compliance, drives continuous improvement, and aligns mine planning activities with the company’s overall production, safety, and financial goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Mine Planning & Design
• Develop, review, and optimize short, medium, and long-term mine plans aligned with production, safety, and financial objectives.
• Lead the preparation of Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans, pit optimizations, mine designs, and scheduling models.
• Integrate geological, geotechnical, hydrological, and operational data to produce robust and practical planning outputs.
• Ensure all mine planning processes adhere to statutory, governance, and internal standards.
2. Leadership & Team Development
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mine planners and engineers.
• Review and approve technical reports, planning outputs, and scheduling deliverables.
• Promote best practices, adoption of digital planning tools, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Act as delegate for the Technical Services Manager when required.
3. Project, Budget & Performance Management
• Support preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and production strategies.
• Identify opportunities to enhance resource recovery, reduce mining costs, and improve operational efficiency.
• Ensure timely delivery of planning outputs to facilitate informed decision-making.
4. Compliance, Safety & Risk Management
• Ensure mine planning activities comply with HSE regulations, audit requirements, SOPs, and company policies.
• Participate in risk assessments, technical reviews, and incident investigations.
• Champion hazard reporting, safety coaching, inspections, and adherence to SOPs across the team.
5. Stakeholder Engagement
• Collaborate closely with Geology, Survey, Operations, and Processing departments to align planning with business goals.
• Communicate key risks, plan variations, and technical recommendations to senior leadership.
• Liaise with consultants, contractors, and regulatory bodies as required.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge and Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive mine planning and technical services experience in large scale open pit operations. Underground experience is also desirable
• Proficiency in mine planning software such as Vulcan 3D, Deswik, Surpac, Whittle, or similar tools.
• Advanced skills in mine design, scheduling, and optimization.
• Strong understanding of geotechnical, hydrological, and operational mining principles.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams.
• High awareness of safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
