ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Mine Maintenance Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and sustaining technical training and safety programs for mobile and fixed equipment maintenance teams. This role ensures that mechanics, electricians, and technicians are qualified to diagnose, repair, and return equipment to service safely and efficiently, in full compliance with regulatory requirements and site standards. The trainer partners with Maintenance, Safety, and Operations departments to reduce equipment downtime, improve preventive maintenance compliance, and drive a proactive safety culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Training & Development

  • Conduct training in mobile maintenance mechanical and electrical maintenance for both experienced mechanics/electricians and trainees.
  • Develop and deliver competency-based training programs on heavy equipment systems, including engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and job aids specific to site equipment.
  • Conduct training needs analysis and develop training plans for process maintenance.
  • Develop and modify training and assessment materials as directed.
  • Contribute to the production of teaching schedules and other training-related administration.

Assessment & Competency Management

  • Conduct assessments to establish current competencies and identify competency gaps.
  • Report on certification and accreditation status.
  • Conduct tests and evaluations to assess trainee proficiency and ensure equipment repairs meet specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of all training and assessment activities.
  • Create and maintain a published skills matrix and recertification calendar.

Supervision & Coaching

  • Supervise and provide on-the-job guidance to trainees.
  • Monitor trainee progress and provide coaching and instruction as required.
  • Mentor junior mechanics and trainees, guiding best practices for repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Safety & Compliance

  • Deliver and document required safety training, including hazard recognition, Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), confined space, electrical safety, working at heights, and incident reporting.
  • Integrate safety into every technical module; conduct pre-task risk assessments with crews.
  • Correct unsafe practices whenever such situations exist.
  • Support incident investigations and embed learnings into training programs.
  • Lead field audits focusing on energy isolation, guarding, line-of-fire, and housekeeping.

Stakeholder Engagement & Administration

  • Coordinate with supervisors to schedule training without impacting production.
  • Engage with departments to ascertain training needs.
  • Report monthly KPIs and training effectiveness; recommend program updates.
  • Maintain all necessary processes and procedures as outlined in the training management system.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Formal Qualifications:

  • Degree/Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Maintenance, or a related field.
  • Relevant trade certification (e.g., Heavy Diesel Fitter Trade Test).

Experience:

  • Minimum 5–8 years of experience in maintenance, preferably in a mining or heavy industrial environment.
  • Proven experience working on mechanized mining equipment (e.g., haul trucks, excavators, LHDs, conveyors, crushers).
  • Experience with preventive maintenance regimes and condition monitoring.
  • Exposure to automation of mining equipment is an advantage.

Technical Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of mobile equipment mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in developing training materials and competency-based programs.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, MSHA).
