Job Purpose
The Mine Captain is responsible for leading shift mining operations, supervising underground crews, and ensuring that production targets are met safely and efficiently. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Lead and coordinate shift mining activities in accordance with approved mining plans and schedules.
- Monitor daily production performance, identify variances, and implement corrective actions to meet targets.
- Ensure optimal utilisation of mining equipment and resources.
- Conduct regular inspections of working areas to maintain operational efficiency.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict adherence to all safety policies, procedures, and statutory regulations.
- Conduct pre‑shift safety briefings and risk assessments.
- Investigate and report any incidents, accidents, or near‑misses, and implement preventive measures.
- Promote a proactive safety culture among crew members.
Team Supervision
- Supervise, mentor, and develop mining crews, including shift bosses and operators.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities clearly, ensuring each team member understands their role.
- Foster teamwork, collaboration, and high morale within the shift.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare accurate shift reports on production, safety, equipment performance, and personnel.
- Liaise with the Mining Manager on operational progress, challenges, and resource needs.
- Maintain records of training, competency assessments, and safety drills.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Education: BSc in Mining Engineering from an accredited tertiary institution.
- Certifications:
- Shift Boss Certificate of Competency.
- Mine Captain Certificate of Competency.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of underground mining experience, with proven supervisory responsibility.
